Unit 3 Context.

‘I confirm that the attached assessment is all my own work and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself and sources have been appropriately referenced.’

The aim of this unit is to create a movie and a poster from film that have been chosen for us. This gives us the skills and knowledge to create more posters and trailers in the future. I aim to create a compelling trailer and poster which will cover the specific age range and audience best suited for that film.

For film there is plenty of genres to choose from the main genres are action, comedy, horror, romance, family, animated, thriller drama, fantasy and science fiction. All of these genres must decide on a specific age rating PG, U, 12, 12A, 15 and 18 by doing this the viewer can decide whether the film will be age appropriate for them and this also helps the producer to create a film that will be aimed at the audience they have researched.

Movie: 1917

Genre: War/Drama

Classification: 15

Audience profile:

  • Male
  • 25-100yrs old
  • Interest in war, drama and action.

Description: Coming to the end of WW1 two soldiers are picked to deliver a message across the front line to stop thousands of British soldiers dying from a trap set by the Germans. This films was widely popular because its made to look like one seamless film by using smart cuts meaning the full 1h 59m it looks like you are following the soldiers the full way across the front line. But the best part of this film is the bond the soldiers share throughout the film and the broken heart you feel when on of them die, Its also full of famous cameos like Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth and Mark Strong.

Why does it relate to audience?: This film relates to the audience I have chosen by using a slow and thin song as background ambiance well relying more on the dialogue and explosions used throughout the trailer its also using words like “From the director of sky fall” They do this because the actors are relatively new to the acting scene so using the director will more likely grab the attention of the mostly male fanbase of James Bond, WW1 was also a very real conflict so choosing to set your film will be a guarantee of grabbing the attention of the older generation who might have fought in the conflict or had close family who did but it can also grab the attention of the younger audience who are interested in the way films are by making the full film look like it has no cuts.

1917 review: modern, flowing and phenomenal | Leicestershire Press

Layout- In this poster it uses a dark grey background with soldiers falling and screaming well there is explosions going off, by doing this they show a dark and grim expectation for the film they also give a gritty depiction of war within this poster.

Text- They use big and bold text with grey and orange colours by doing this it catches the attention of the audience looking at the poster, and it makes it easier to know the name of the film.

Target audience- This poster engages its audience by showing what people who like action and war want with soldiers creaming and explosions going off next to them, its a busy poster with a lot that the audience has to take in.

Names of stars/Director- This poster uses no names because the actors used in this film are relatively new so instead the poster says from the director of sky fall which was a smash hit and would draw more people to buy tickets then showing the actors names.

Main image/Background- The main image is a soldier standing looking shocked well explosions go off and solider fall and tumble around him giving the audience the illusion of a rush or a battle going on in the poster.

Secondary text- The secondary text used is “time is the enemy” by saying this on the poster its saying to the audience that time is involved in the film and that time could be the thing that kills them by saying its the enemy.

From the poster and trailer i can see the film is aimed at people who like war films or have served in the army, i can also identify the audience to be mainly aimed at males within the age range of 25-100. I can assume this age range because of the time setting is based in WW1 which was a slow and drawn out war with less casualties and deaths than WW2 and there’s not to many big films set in this war. I can also tell that this is aimed at people who like dramas and action, i can infer this from the trailer as it has long dialogues between the actors and big action set pieces which tells me the trailer was designed to grab the attention of drama and action fans well, also catering to the war fans.

Movie: Halloween

Genre: Horror/Slasher

Classification: 18

Audience profile:

  • Male/Female
  • 18-50 yrs old
  • Interest in slashers, murder and action.

Description: A sequel to the original halloween four decades after the original killing spree of Michael Myers he returns in this sequel to kill Laurie strode and her family. This film skips every film after the original giving the halloween franchise a chance to update with the times and also forget about the messy sequels, they also hugely increased the body count and blood used in this film.

Why does it relate with the audience?: This film appeals to the audience I have chosen because it a film that or ready has 11 films in the franchise so the audience and fanbase is or ready there, it also has barely any music until Michael puts on the mask bringing back the original music bringing nostalgia to people who watched the original in the 70’s. It shows off the studios involved like Miramax and Blumhouse which is involved in almost every modern horror film so by doing this they’re gaining the attention of the younger audience who have watched any modern horror they also do this because theres no actors in this film known to the younger generation so they don’t show the names.

Import Posters HALLOWEEN – 2018 – US Movie Wall Poster Print - 30cm x 43cm / 12 Inches x 17 Inches: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home

Layout- The layout is simple for this poster theres a plain back background with the killers face in the left corner and the halloween title in the right corner.

Text- The text used is basic with white text for the title and orange text for the release date by doing this its simple but effective in getting the attention of the audience.

Target audience- This poster grabs the attention of the audience by showing the killer has aged and the masked used for the killings have aged meaning the films matured from the originals the the audience knows its changed from the first film, this is also the 12 film in the series so they don’t have to hide the killer and show him on full display which the poster had done. But the poster doesn’t show the age rating.

Name of star/Director- The poster doesn’t show any names or directors by doing this they are mostly selling the film on the return of Michael Myers and the icon he is in horror and tv.

Main image/Background- The poster uses a black background and and only Michael Myers face by doing this its simple and eye-catching leaving the viewer to guess what the film could be about.

Secondary text- The secondary text is the date the film is releasing in bold orange text making it stand out with the title and making the viewer want to buy tickets for that date because theres no other text to give away what the film is about leaving the viewer curious.

After researching the trailer and poster i have identified the age range as female and male between the age range of 18-50, I chose this age range because its not the first film in he series this being the 11th film in the serious, But because its a sequel that removes all but the first film it can draw in new fans from the 18 to 24 age range, Michael Myers is also a massive slasher icon pretty much making the slasher genre popular so this film or ready has a huge cult following which the trailer aims at well also appealing to murder and action fans.

Movie: DeadPool 2

Genre: Comedy/superhero/action

Classification: 15

Audience profile:

  • Male/Female
  • 15-40yrs old
  • interest in action, comedy and superheroes.

Description: This film is the sequel to the hit 2016 film, the story for this films is after losing his girlfriend he led down a trail of killing and depression until he runs into a mutant called Russel who’s been tortured and beat and tortured by the orphanage he lives in and because and because of this torture he turns into a super villain in the future, because of this a time traveler called Cable comes to the past to kill him.

Why does it relate to the audience?

This film relates to audience by using dark and comedic tone through the whole film which has gained a huge audience in the last couple of years, its also a sequal to a film with a huge audience or ready and it based of a huge comic book character that is beloved by many, it also introduces cables which most people asked for after the release of the first one by doing this they have guaranteed ticket sales for Cable fans and they also use the marvel logo before the title to to sell even more tickets for the marvel lovers.

Deadpool 2 Gets An Official Poster. Officially. | Deadpool 2 movie, Deadpool movie, Free movies online

Layout- The layout for the poster has the three main characters huddled up with DeadPool sticking his finger in Cables ear showing the films a comedy and Cable holding a gun showing its also an action film, It also shows the new character Domino in the poster to sell more tickets for people thats a fan.

Text-The text says DeadPool 2 in bold red but the text is rusted and scratched up by doing this it catches the attention of the viewer they also do this by putting the red text over a white background.

Target audience- This poster catches the audiences attention by using to new fan favourite characters on the poster Cable and Domino, with Deadpools finger Cables ear showing it hasn’t lost the comedy from the first one, it also has Josh Brolin on full display in the poster who is a huge A-list actor so without using his name they instead showed him in the poster grabbing the attention of his fans who don’t read posters.

Name of star/Director-There is no name or directors on the poster but instead uses the characters on the front of the posters knowing the first was a hit and just showing the actors on the front of the poster has a bigger effect than showing names for the people who don’t read posters.

Main image/Background- The background is white with Dead-pools red suit and the red title being easy to spot from a distance by doing this the poster has made it eye catching and appealing for the average cinema watcher.

Secondary text- The secondary text is in black and white with with the joke “He’s not coming alone” by doing this hidden joke it shows the viewer its a comedy and is keeping the jokes going from the first but it also has two meanings with the cast adding two more superheroes, on the bottom in white text it has the release date on may 15th.

After researching trailers i have now learned how to attract a certain audience and age group that are best suited to the films. By looking at three different trailers in three different genres I can now identify the different styles and tactics the producers use to sell tickets and attract certain age groups, They do this by using certain music, scenes, text and if its a sequel they will show older characters or scenes to bring the older audience back.

After researching the trailer and poster i can now identify the audience as 15-40 i have chose this age range because of the huge success of the original so this film all ready has a huge following in the superhero genre, it also introduces one of the biggest characters from the dead pool comics this being Cable who has a huge fan base so by showing him off within the trailer they have or ready filled seats before looking at the age range, so i decided to do 18-40 this age range aims at fans of the original comic book serious well also aims at the fans of the first film.

So after researching 3 different films within three different genres i have improved my knowledge of identifying audiences and age range within the genres, because of this I have improved my over all awareness to identify the different age groups and age ranges, This will help me with my final project to decide on the style of trailer and edits i will use within my trailer and this will help me decide a poster that best suits the people i want to watch the film.
