Unit 4 & 6 context.

‘I confirm that the attached assessment is all my own work and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself and sources have been appropriately referenced.’

For this project I will be learning new terms and words to explain music videos in more detail. I will also be researching and creating my own music using the new skills i have learned, I will start this project by examining and breaking down three different styles of music videos, next i will start my research I will do this by picking the artists I want to use for my song and choosing three different music videos he has created, after this I will research other student films to gain new ideas and break there videos down by doing this I can pick styles I would want to use.

Usually a rap video or hip-hop video follows a convention, the convention is usually simple this being a group of people like a gang or a single person rapping the lyrics well the camera follows, the video is usually performance and use various camera angles to make the rapper seem big and powerful and to show off the money they have, most of these videos will be shot in graffiti alleyways and destroyed buildings, you will also find most rap videos use digetic sound to introduce the song.

Outkast-Ms. Jackson I believe this music video is a non-narrative/performance I chose this because it hints at a story without the lyrics and music video without showing much, and I believe it is also performance because the performers sing the full song well doing stuff within the video.

During the video it uses a lot of close ups and low shots they do this to make the artist seem more powerful or bigger than they are, it also zooms in on expensive items within a broken and destroyed house they do this to show off the money they have even though they are broke in the music video.

The editing style is no different to any other hip-hop music video, its fast and cut within short scenes, they do this because the style of rap is fast so the video follows I find it keeps the viewer occupied because most people don’t watch rap videos for the story within the videos.

Most rap songs use streets and graffiti ally ways but this video uses a broken down house with plenty of props like cars, buckets and tools i find by doing this they have created a new style of video instead of copy and pasting every rap video since N.W.A in the late eighties.

There is a few digetic sounds within this video like raindrops falling and also a car explosion half way through the video to create a pause within the music video.

Whats the convention of a rock song? The biggest and most prominent thing within a rock video is the wide shot, this shot will be used constantly to show off the band and give a full look at the band playing the instruments within the song you might also see a lot of close ups on the riffs of a guitar or the drummer chucking his drum sticks in the air, for editing you will see a lot of quick cuts to get through every member of the band well also relying on a lot of filters like noir and dark filters to go with the style of music played, The location is usually in a dark run down place with a bare minimum for lighting but i think with modern rock it has changed over to a more lighter tone for the location with genres like screamo and bands like Slipknot or Korn really doing this style more than any other band, Most songs will use a digetic sound to introduce the song or even introduce the band.

Foo fighters-The pretender I believe this film is performance, I decided on this because its filmed in a very peculiar way having plenty of close ups a fast cuts, it also doesn’t use many props or change location.

There is a varied number of different shots within this music video, They use close-ups of the there faces with over exaggerated facial gestures and movements, another shot would be a long shot showing off the full band playing, but the most popular shot used within this video and every other rock video is the low shot making the band look powerful looking down on the viewer.

The editing style in this music video is no different to any other rock video the cuts are fast and follows the beat and style of music that is played the only time the fast cuts stop are when slow pans showing off the band happen and when the police line up at the end of the video to show off how many have turned up to stop the band.

The usual style for rock videos are either bright or dark, for this video its mainly bright right using red and white as the main colors of the video, especially at the end of the video with the neon red blood drowning the full video. the video also seems to be very over saturated with the whites and reds used throughout. The video is shot in a hanger which is a very unusual spot for a rock video with them normally being shot on stages or outside.

There are no digetic or non-digetic sounds within the video it only uses the full song.

Whats usually the convention of a pop song? You will find a lot of pop videos use close ups and long shot to show the singer doing the song well also using the long shot to show the singer dancing usually with back-up dancers, pop songs usually use a high quality camera that shoots 4.6k to 12k, The videos will use a lot of color grading to over saturate the video by doing this they create a more up beat video to go with the song you might also see a bigger budget to use special effects, Costumes are a massive part so you will normally see a lot of bright vibrant clothing or you will see a lot of trend starting within the videos because of the persuasion pop songs have on younger audience, digetic is heavily used within pop songs usually used to create or intro the video and set up a backstory or mini story in the video or song.

I would say this video is thematic, I believe this because its full of dancing and and lots of street locations and the camera is always moving to different locations with different people doing different dances, i also believe its a performance because there is a lot of singing to the camera.

There are not to many different shots within the trailer the main ones are tracking, the full video is full of people dancing and smiling well the camera is tracking and following the full movement of the person dancing, the only other angle used was a close up ro off the singer and to also show the famous cameos within the video.

The editing in this video is very saturated and the cuts are slow there is a few seconds of video before a cut but the music video is very saturated with bright colors by doing this they give the viewer a warm feeling going with the theme of the song.

The location changes non stop through out the music video there being a new location every scene with mot of the locations being outside and within a school hall, the lighting is very bright and goes with the vibrant outfits and props.

The video starts with a non-digetic sound of a busy street going into the start of the song by doing this they create the mood of the song, theirs also one digetic sound throughout the full video that being a clap which goes a long with the beat of the song and also well the beat stops.

After researching the various music videos I have gained new knowledge on how to break a video down and identify new things I could take and create my own in my music video, from this new skill I can break down student films and break down the chosen artist.
